Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Vol. 1
Ophélie Gaillard, Pulcinella Orchestra
AP080 - 1CD - 72' - Mar 24, 2014

This program offers a portrait of the most gifted and surprising son of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose tercentenary will be celebrated in 2014: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788). Highly admired in his own century by Haydn, Gluck and Mozart, he appears to us today as a totally original genius. "A musician can only move others if he himself is moved: it is essential that he experience all the moods he wishes to arouse in his listeners. In languid and sad places, he will become languid and sad; this must be heard and seen." With these words, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach affirmed his vision of music as an expression of personal feelings. To this end, he did not hesitate to revolutionize established principles of form, harmony and rhythm, using abrupt key changes, odd squares and unexpected, vigorous contrasts to move the audience directly. In the Sonate Sanguineus et Melancholicus, a program piece, he depicts a conversation between a Sanguine character and a Melancholic as a kind of psychological analysis of a dual personality. This duality runs through all the works on this recording, from the incredible Sinfonia n. 5, a hit among hits, to the two masterpieces of the cello concertos. CPE Bach's revolutionary music transports us and spins us into a thousand and one emotions! The symphony, the two concertos and the trio sonata sound like a revelation under the committed bow of Ophélie Gaillard at the head of her virtuoso ensemble!
